Do you love routines?
With school back in session for most kids, getting back into the routine is the focus of lots of families. Setting alarms, laying out the clothes the night before, packing the lunches, headed out the door at a certain time and determining whoās picking up who from where and at what time.
But once you get the routine down, itās just part of your daily life.
Luke 22:39
āAnd he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.ā
In the King James Version, we read the phrase āas he was wontā. This means “as he was accustomed to or as he usually did”. Jesus was going to the garden to pray. He was taking the time to get alone with God and spend time with Him. The disciples didnāt ask, āwhere are you going?ā They knew. It was part of Jesusā daily life.
But, we know whatās ahead, donāt we? We know Heās about to be arrested and taken. We know Heās about to face torture and ridicule. We know Heās about to be crucified. We know Heās about to die.
That would be enough to make me fearful, worried, and frantically trying to fix or change things. Iād forsake everything that was part of my daily routine and search for a way to change it all. āDo something!ā, my mind would scream, desperately seeking to run or hide.
But Jesus knew. And He went to the garden to pray. He took the time to meet with the Father because He knew thatās where His help came from, thatās where He would be strengthened, thatās where He would be in the will of God.
When we look at our daily routine, do we have a time set aside for getting alone with God? Letās be honest, if we do, sometimes, when life gets busy and hectic, whatās the first thing to get forsaken? Whatās the thing that gets moved around and we keep saying, āIāll do that laterā?
God is the Creator of all, even time. He knows our beginning and end. He sees and hears all. He cares. Heās the One who conquered sin, who died for us and offers us full payment for the debt we owe. And He wants to meet with us. He wants us to abide with Him. But will we take the time?
As he was wont.
